10 & UP PRIORITY REGISTRATION

Welcome back! This is the super secret sign up page for the two 10 & Up classes I’ll be offering, beginning in May. If any seats remain unfilled after this weekend, I will open up registration to the public on Monday, April 26th. If you miss out on a spot, you can fill out a new registration form (link below) to be added to the wait list. And Teen/Tween workshops are coming soon!

If your student was previously in the K-6 program:

Please consider the differences between the two programs before making the switch. The 10 & Up classes focus more on developing observational drawing skills, with less of a “step-by-step” approach for some projects. This means your student should be ready to make artistic decisions without being told exactly what to do for each and every step. I will show examples of techniques, and of course assist with questions and offer guidance for improvements.

Please note that if a student exhibits signs of not being ready for this class (needs so much extra help that I cannot give attention to everyone equally, or is disruptive), they will be advised to wait for the K-6 class openings instead. It is rare for this to happen, and is usually because younger artists may not be quite ready on an emotional or developmental level. They will get there usually by age 11 or 12! Please make sure your student is ready for a more serious and independent class setting. This does NOT mean students need to be advanced artists to join this class. It is more about readiness :)

What to expect in the 10 & Up classes:

Classes are two hours long.

Every week we work on a new project. One day each month is devoted to pencil or charcoal drawing, where we will either work from a reference photo or a still life set up. Occasionally we will do scratch art projects that involve delicate and sharp needle and knife tools. Two weeks will be devoted to acrylic and other water-based painting lessons (watercolor or gouache), and one week of pastels. Other mediums may be introduced from time to time, based on interest.

Students will make use of rulers, and will learn to grid for purposes of accuracy and keeping ratios when enlarging printed reference images. We will practice “drawing what you see” and training eyes to see like an artist, rather than “drawing what you think” which is what observational drawing is all about. Blending, shading, and highlighting with dry media (pencil, charcoal, etc.) will be an ongoing theme each month, as a foundation to painting. All of those elements put together will lead to improved paintings.

The focus is on learning, process, and progress, not producing a masterpiece each week. Occasionally a student may not finish a project, and that is ok. Learning is still happening. Growth happens over time, and confidence grows right along with developing and honing those skills!
